My mooncup and Me; one for the ladies!

I have a friend who uses tampons, and was living in Guatemala teaching. She did not get on with the ones she found over there, and so every time someone came to visit, she would ask them to bring tampons from home. It got me thinking about when I return to Guatemala for a longer time, and so I decided to finally invest in a moon-cup. This is my experience  of the moon-cup. I won't go into all the specifications because everything can be found at mooncup uk's website And obviously everybody is different; this is just my personal account.

I ordered the moon-cup from the official website as I was wary and unsure of the cheaper brands, and noticed that the official moon-cup website offered a lot of customer advice and support; something which I thought I may well be making use of! The website also explains which size to choose, how to insert, etc, which is worth paying an extra few pounds for.

When my moon-cup arrived I could not wait for my period to follow; I really have never been so excited for mother nature to hit!

When my period did appear; one morning before work, I rushed to sterilise my moon-cup in a cup (which I use solely for that purpose now) of boiling salt water. I rinsed it off, and frantically tried to insert moon-cup following the manufacturer's instructions (fold in half then fold again).... It was not happening and I was late for work, so to my dismay I had to use a sanitary towel that day. But I was not to be put off; the next day I lay on my back to insert, and instead of folding, simply squeezed it in (it opens up once inside); result!

When in, the moon-cup is fantastic.... you can leave it in longer than a tampon, and you do because it holds more fluid, and you simply do not feel it there. The problem is getting it in - and even worse for myself was getting it out. Without going into too much detail it is can quite literally become a blood bath! Now I bought the larger size, as instructed (as I have had a natural childbirth), but I am quite small, so I'm going to give it one more cycle, and if it's still so hard to take out I think I may have to try the small size afterall.

So my advice is to ease yourself in; don't throw out your sanitary towels just yet (in fact for the first period, for your own assurance you may want to wear pads with the moon-cup), and if you can, try and make sure you are taking it out, rinsing and re-placing, in your own home, or at least a toilet cubicle which has a sink in !

and if you plan on using it for travelling, please give yourselves a good 3 periods to get used to the moon-cup.

and please make use of the website as it is full of good advice..... and their fun mooncup rap!
Enjoy Ladies!

After 6 months of visits to the Dr and getting more and more unwell and frustrated, my GP now thinks I have M.E. - we are still a little way from official diagnosis, but already it makes so much sense. the muscle aches for no apparent reason, the headaches, joint pains, heaviness, confusion, lack of concentration....
So, my first reaction was of course to sit in the car and cry. It was something I didn't understand but knew was long term. But imediately after that, I wondered how it would affect my travelling, as this is so important to me....

I have pondered over this and I don't see any reason why I cannot still travel. I just need to make slight lifestyle adjustments; back up plans, and increased flexibility. The main thing is that because I get so overwhelmingly exhausted, for every day of travel/activity, I will need to plan at least one day of rest.

I'm looking into meditation, yoga and relaxation more than ever... and I'm determined not to let this get the better of me. Whatever happens to me, I want to be able to travel.

I would be interested in anyone who suffers M.E. or CFS. I would love to hear any hints/tips on travelling with this 'condition' and how it affects you. Maybe you could even write a guest post? Please get in touch; on here, via my facebook page 'Double Trouble Travel' or leave a comment and I will get in touch with you. x

Travel Products.....

My plan to write a travel blog did not initially include the idea of product testing/blogging. However, in making my own travel arrangements, I have chosen to swap some of my staple beauty products, for more environmentally friendly( and space friendly) ones. My main 2 products I have changed are re-usable cotton pads in lieu of my disposable cotton wool pads, and my moon-cup in lieu of the many many tampons and sanitary towels which I get through..... so watch this space for some of my product reviews.

Why do we go to the places we go?

...sometimes our motivations can  seem to make so much sense. I guess as long as there's a goal, there's focus. we get something done. But is ticking off a list of '10 places to see in the states' really a true-to-yourself way to travel? Of course not!

I have a map, which I've had for a few years, and I put stars on each country I visit. The stars at the moment are mostly clustered around Europe, and central America, with a couple in the states, china,  and Australia. I actually  feel really bad about this; I want to go to Russia, to spread my stars out. Maybe Canada too, and Argentina. what desire do I have to go to these places? None at all actually, oh but the map would look so much better with the stars spread out.

So yes, I love to travel, and of course this is a travel blog.... But sometimes I have to question my motivations... and  travelling to 'say I've been there' (to who exactly, and why?) should not necessarily be a reason to go there. Just like the way some people seem to 'go out' for the night for the sole purpose of staging a sequence of photos to prove they had a good night, meanwhile so busy taking photos that the night in question passes unnoticed.

Do not let your trip pass unnoticed, simply because it was somewhere you thought you should visit, or because a guidebook told you to. Go where your heart tells you, or even where the next bus is going. Be spontaneous, and don't worry if you miss a 'must see'. Instead see a 'rarely seen'. Some of the most amazing experiences I have had have been places I've ended up, not where I've planned or been advised to go.

Good Luck!

Introductions

Hi, and welcome to my blog :)

DoubleTroubleTravel is basically a blog about me (Jade) travelling with my daughter (Jahzara).

I took Jahzara backpacking through central America when she was 3, and since then we have been on various trips; from simple weekends in London to a couple of months exploring Guatemala.

I have always meant to write about our trips and to share hints and tips with other travellers; especially families and particularly single parent units like ours.

I'm new to this, so bear with me.... but we also have a facebook page - Double Trouble Travel where I will post photos, videos and so on.
